Heres a bit of history of Elizabeth Phillips, she was a very agile person who would weave baskets and peddle them like all native women of that time ,she would bundle up her wares of comb baskets, hampers picnic baskets ,shopping and clothes baskets in blankets and set off with one of her many grandchildren and ride on the train to places like New Glasgow, Antigonish or even to Port hawksbury selling door to door all over the towns carrying whatever that could be carried and selling or even bartering the baskets for used clothes, clothes of all kinds and would trek back and forth to the train station and leave the bundles of clothes there till all the baskets were sold or time for the return trip came on the Sydney bound train arriving at that certain point, but believe me that when the used clothes were being given out (tebidimk) the next day all the grandkids would be there waiting in line to get "new" clothes,no brand name clothes here but whatever fits you, this type of peddling was known as "kiwiksit"or asking for used wares..when you were selling baskets you would hear sayings like "not today maybe tomorrow"or "my husbands not home"and the best one yet was "could you come back later?" and when you did go back no one was home...
